Contact Lenses Use

Prior to touching the contact lens or one's eyes, it is imperative to meticulously wash & rinse hands with a soap that does not have moisturizers or allergens such as fragrance. The soap must not be antibacterial due to risk of improper hand cleansing and the chance of destroying the normal bacteria found on the eye. These natural bacteria keep pathogenic bacteria from colonizing the cornea. The procedure for removing or inserting a contact lens varies slightly depending upon whether the lens is soft or rigid.

Don’t spit on your lenses to clean them.  The use tap water, bottled water or homemade salt water should never be employed to rinse or store your contacts in.  Under no circumstance should you mix different cleaners or eye drops.  Lotions, sprays or creams should not come in contact with your lenses.  Don’t use eyeliner on the inside of your lower eyelid.  Never wear lenses when you swim or enter a hot tub or sauna.  Avoid using cleaning products when you are wearing your contacts.  Use contacts only as prescribed.  If a problem does develop, discontinue wearing them and consult your eye doctor immediately.
